Arc Blockchain Launches with World's Largest Financial Institutions as Validators
Circle's Arc blockchain is set to launch its public mainnet on September 16, 2026, with a unique validator cohort that includes some of the world's largest financial institutions. The founding validators are BlackRock, Mastercard, Visa, DTCC, and eight other global financial institutions, making it the most institutionally concentrated validator set ever assembled for a public Layer-1 launch.
Arc's consensus engine, Malachite, implements Tendermint-style Byzantine Fault Tolerant (BFT) consensus, which can deliver deterministic finality in roughly 350 milliseconds. However, this comes with a trade-off: BFT protocols require a known, bounded set of validators to reach agreement, making Arc a permissioned blockchain.
The integration of Circle's Reth execution layer and Malachite consensus engine allows for high-performance transactions and settlement guarantees. The network also features a unique gas system denominated in USDC, which is adapted from Ethereum's EIP-1559 fee mechanism but with a weighted moving average of network demand to smooth fee spikes.
