Argentina's Crypto Adoption Soars with 94% of Trading Volume in Stablecoins
Argentina has become one of the world's leading adopters of cryptocurrency, with 94% of its peso-denominated trading volume flowing into dollar-pegged stablecoins. This dominance is a result of long-standing distrust in the local currency, which was severely devalued in the early 2000s after the country's banking crisis.
The introduction of capital controls in 2019 further fueled this trend, as the government limited individual dollar purchases to $200 per month and imposed stricter eligibility requirements for foreign currency access. Stablecoins like USDC provided an accessible alternative, allowing Argentines to store their savings in a more stable digital form.
As inflation rates began to moderate, stablecoin adoption persisted, with downloads of crypto wallets like Lemon continuing to rise. Analysts suggest that stablecoins have shifted from emergency assets to everyday financial tools for many Argentines.
