Argentina’s Crypto Market Dominated by Stablecoins Amid Dollar-Access Needs
Argentina's cryptocurrency market has taken on a new role in recent years, shifting from speculation to serving as a tool for accessing U.S. dollars. According to data from Artemis and cited by a16z crypto, about 94% of peso-denominated crypto trading volume now flows into stablecoins.
This trend highlights the country's reliance on cryptocurrencies as a dollar-access tool, particularly after Argentina reintroduced currency controls in 2019. Individuals were restricted to purchasing $200 through the official market each month, while some residents were barred from buying dollars altogether.
Crypto exchanges and peer-to-peer markets provided an alternative route for accessing U.S. dollars. Stablecoins could be purchased with pesos, held in digital wallets, and transferred around the clock.
