Argentina's Peso Crypto Trading Volume is 94% Stablecoins
Argentina's peso-denominated cryptocurrency trading volume is increasingly dominated by stablecoins, with 94% of transactions flowing into dollar-pegged stablecoins. According to a16z crypto data, this is the highest share among major currencies tracked by Artemis.
This shift towards stablecoins in Argentina's cryptocurrency market is notable given the country's history of distrust towards its own currency. In 2001 and 2002, the government froze bank deposits and forcibly converted dollar accounts into pesos through Decree 214/2002, leading to a significant loss of value for the peso.
Today, about one in five Argentines use cryptocurrency, one of the highest adoption rates in Latin America. Contractor pay in USDC has also become more common, with a rise in stablecoin usage even as inflation cools and dollar purchases grow easier.
