Argentina's Stablecoin Market Surges with 94% of Peso-Denominated Crypto Trading Volume

Argentina's stablecoin market has seen a significant surge in recent years, with stablecoins dominating peso-denominated crypto trading volume at an impressive 94%. This is according to data from Artemis and cited by a16z crypto. The high demand for digital dollars can be attributed to Argentina's history of households saving in US dollars, which became harder after currency controls returned in 2019.

The introduction of stablecoins like USDT and USDC provided individuals with an alternative route to dollar exposure. Unlike official banking channels, these crypto markets operated around the clock, allowing users to hold tokens, transfer them between wallets, or use them for international payments.

In August 2026, a16z estimated that digital dollars were traded at roughly a 4% premium to official dollars, after the central bank loosened foreign-exchange restrictions and removed limits on individual foreign-currency purchases in April 2025. This move narrowed the gap between parallel-market levels and official dollar access.
