Arkade and Bark Hit Production with Bitcoin-Native Infrastructure
Three years after Bitfinex covered Ark as an unimplemented proposal, the architecture is now in production. Two operational versions, Arkade and Bark, run on the Bitcoin mainnet, offering a range of services including payments, swaps, and escrow.
Ark Labs raised $5.2 million in March 2026 with backing from Tether, Ego Death Capital, Epoch VC, and Anchorage Digital. This funding has contributed to the development and implementation of Arkade and Bark, which share the same architecture but have different goals. Bark prioritizes self-custodial bitcoin payments and interoperability with Lightning Network, while Arkade extends the VTXO model toward a more general execution environment.
Arkade Assets, introduced in October 2025, supports assets that move within the same off-chain execution environment, where Bitcoin serves as the final settlement layer. Hodl Hodl integrated Arkade into its escrow system in May 2026 to accelerate trade settlement, while Bitrefill incorporated it as a payment option on its gift card platform with instant, fee-free purchases.
The emergence of Wavelength, an alpha-stage toolkit from Lightning Labs built on a settlement layer similar to Ark for agentic payments, confirmed that the design can attract industry attention beyond the teams that built the original implementations. The architecture allows each implementation to advance independently, and payments between users of different implementations can be routed through Lightning.
