SoftBank subsidiary Arm Holdings has made a significant strategic shift by announcing its first-ever production silicon chip, the AGI CPU. The move marks a departure from its traditional role as a processor blueprint designer and licenser to becoming a direct competitor in the data center market.

The AGI CPU is specifically designed for AI data centers, packing 136 Neoverse V3 cores into a single chip with a 300-watt thermal design power. TSMC will manufacture it on its 3nm process.

Arm's new strategy aims to capture the lucrative AI infrastructure buildout opportunity, which it believes is too massive and fast-moving for its licensing model to keep up. The company is targeting $25B in total annual revenue by 2031, with $15B coming from direct chip sales.

With over 50 companies supporting the AGI CPU platform, including Meta Platforms as the lead development partner and first customer, Arm is confident of its success. However, the move has raised concerns about competition within the data center market, where x86 chips from Intel and AMD have historically dominated.
