Armstrong Backs x402: Open Payment Protocol for Autonomous AI Transactions

Share

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong is betting big on x402, an open payment protocol designed for AI agents. In a recent social media post, he wrote that 'x402 is going to be huge eventually.' The reason: AI agents will need to make payments autonomously, and their numbers will far outnumber humans.

x402 uses the HTTP 402 standard, which has been around for decades but never widely adopted. It allows AI agents to request and complete payments for digital services without human intervention. This is done using stablecoin-based onchain payments, enabling instant transactions without separate accounts or subscriptions.

Armstrong believes that traditional payment methods are not designed for high-frequency, low-value transactions made by autonomous systems. By combining stablecoins with the HTTP 402 standard, x402 provides a foundational layer for the emerging 'agent economy.' This could remove significant friction for automated systems operating at scale.
