Armstrong Blasts 'Incumbents' Over CLARITY Act Opposition
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has accused 'entrenched incumbents' of lobbying against the CLARITY Act, which he claims would provide clearer rules for crypto companies in US financial services.
Armstrong argues that established financial players are trying to stop crypto businesses from competing in this space, and pointed to Donald Trump's 2024 campaign promise to remove former SEC Chair Gary Gensler as an example of the reaction against increased regulation. Since Trump took office, there has been progress on clearer crypto rules, including an executive order calling for more transparency, the appointment of new regulators like SEC Chair Paul Atkins and CFTC Chair Mike Selig, and passage of the GENIUS Act for stablecoins.
The CLARITY Act is seen as a key piece of legislation in this area, but Armstrong says it's facing opposition from those who don't want competition from crypto companies. He singled out Senator Elizabeth Warren as one of those seeking to stop the bill, and noted that banks have concerns over stablecoin rewards.
Armstrong believes that consumers and crypto firms need clearer rules, while established financial companies should not be able to block competitors through lobbying. He urges lawmakers to pass the bill, saying it's in everyone's interest: 'banks, law enforcement, crypto companies, and most importantly the American people'.
