Armstrong: Crypto and AI Are Complementary, Not Competing
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has come out against the idea of pivoting from cryptocurrency to artificial intelligence (AI), calling it 'zero-sum, scarcity thinking'. In a recent post on X, Armstrong argued that treating AI and crypto as competing themes is misguided.
According to Armstrong, crypto is a general-purpose technology that should be considered infrastructure, similar to electricity or the internet. He believes that a strong AI megatrend does not detract from crypto but makes it more important.
Armstrong pointed out that AI agents will require their own financial infrastructure as Agentic Finance (AiFi) becomes more mainstream. They will need real-time programmable money, which is provided by crypto. AI agents will have multiple responsibilities, including holding funds, making payments, engaging in trading, and acting as financial advisors.
Armstrong's comments come amid a recent trend of Bitcoin mining and other crypto companies shifting towards AI. However, he believes that this shift should not be seen as a replacement for crypto, but rather a complement to it.
