Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has pushed back against the idea that people in the crypto industry should shift their focus to artificial intelligence. According to Armstrong, this perspective is misguided and represents a zero-sum game mindset. He argues that cryptocurrencies are general-purpose technologies, like electricity or the internet, which support other emerging trends without being replaced by them.

Armstrong emphasizes that AI agents will need financial infrastructure to operate, including payment systems and currencies that can be programmed in real-time - exactly what cryptocurrencies offer. As a result, he believes that the importance of crypto will only increase with the growth of AI.

Coinbase has already developed protocols like x402, Base, and USDC ($1.00 · Live) to support these agents' financial needs. Armstrong sees potential for AI proxies to participate in transactions, serve as financial advisors, and even collect or borrow funds for new projects.
