x402 is built around HTTP 402, the 'Payment Required' status code, and primarily supports stablecoin-based onchain payments. This approach removes significant friction for automated systems that operate at scale. By combining stablecoins with the HTTP 402 standard, x402 could become a foundational layer for the emerging 'agent economy.'

Armstrong believes that AI agents will eventually need to transact autonomously and that their numbers will far exceed humans. He sees x402 as essential for the future AI economy.
