Armstrong's Charity Comments Spark Outrage Among Philanthropy Supporters

Brian Armstrong, co-founder and CEO of Coinbase, has sparked outrage with his comments on charity and philanthropy. He believes that traditional charitable foundations can be 'a net negative' for the world, arguing that they often become 'captured by ideology.'

Armstrong, who is worth several billion dollars, explained in a recent interview why he has no desire to create a charitable foundation or donate more of his wealth through traditional means. He claims that philanthropies and charities can have unintended consequences, such as increasing crime.

Despite joining the Giving Pledge in 2018, committing to give away at least half of his wealth to charitable causes, Armstrong shut down his nonprofit GiveCrypto in 2023 and quietly withdrew from the Giving Pledge in 2024. He now uses a donor-advised fund to direct his money toward causes he believes are 'helping civilization advance.'

Armstrong's comments have been met with criticism from several influential individuals, including Jesse Livermore, who called it 'some of the dumbest [thing] I've ever heard.'
