Art World Shift: Code-Generated NFTs Take Center Stage
A new type of NFT (non-fungible token) is emerging in the art world, one that uses code to generate unique digital artworks. This phenomenon is called generative art NFTs, where an artist writes a set of rules and an algorithm produces thousands of variations, each with its own distinct traits.
The platform Art Blocks has popularized this model on Ethereum, processing over $1 billion in trading volume since it launched in November 2020. The process works like a cookie-cutter factory that randomizes the dough color, sprinkle pattern, and icing every time. Each output is unique but still belongs to the same batch.
The artist defines the visual building blocks, shapes, color palettes, line weights, background types, and the conditions under which each element can vary. A random seed from the NFT's token data on the blockchain feeds into the code at minting time, determining the specific combination the buyer receives.
