Astra Model Surge Fuels Semiconductor Sector Recovery
OpenAI's latest AI model, GPT-6 Astra, has given the semiconductor sector a much-needed boost. The company's most ambitious model to date was released on September 3 and required over 100,000 GPUs to train, indicating its significant appetite for silicon.
This massive demand for semiconductors has helped investors feel better about the market, which had been experiencing a decline since late July. In fact, semiconductor sales reached $146.8 billion in July 2026, a 6.4% increase from the previous month and a 135.1% surge compared to July 2025.
Astra's impressive performance on various benchmarks has also contributed to its impact on the sector. The model scored a perfect 100% on ExploitBench, a cybersecurity evaluation tool, and hit 99.9% on ARC-AGI-3, one of the toughest general intelligence benchmarks available. OpenAI President Greg Brockman described Astra as marking a potential entry into the 'AGI era.'
The model's advanced cyber features have been implemented with strengthened safeguards specifically for its defensive applications. OpenAI has also launched a program called Daybreak to provide early access to select cybersecurity organizations.
