August Dormant Bitcoin Surge: Five Times July's Pace
Dormant Bitcoin has seen a dramatic increase in activity over the first 10 days of August, moving at a pace more than five times that of July. According to data from Btcparser.com, 2,209.05 BTC left long-idle addresses during this period, surpassing the 1,264.16 BTC tracked across all of July. This represents an increase of 74.7% over July's total.
The daily pace of dormant Bitcoin activity has also accelerated significantly, reaching 220.91 BTC per day in August, compared to just 40.78 BTC per day in July. The data set also reveals a shift in the age profile of the moving coins, with addresses created in 2013 and 2014 accounting for about 71% of the Bitcoin moved during this period.
The increase in dormant activity has sparked speculation that it may be related to the recent Coldcard wallet exploit, which could have prompted long-term holders to reassess their storage methods. However, the data does not establish a causal connection between the exploit and the increased movement.
