August's Crypto Winners Fading as Yields Climb, Interest Rates Bite
The DeFiLlama Movers tool has revealed that some of August's top-performing cryptocurrencies are losing ground, despite their strong momentum in recent weeks.
According to the data, tokens such as Zcash ($ZEC), Uniswap ($UNI), Hyperliquid ($HYPE), $XRP, and Solana ($SOL) have shown better performance over the last month than Bitcoin. However, these same tokens are now experiencing weakness in the past week.
The divergence is particularly interesting given that altcoins had a strong trend at the beginning of September, with 83 out of top 100 alternative currencies closing August with profits. The leading assets of the period were $ZEC, $HYPE, $SOL, and Pump.fun, as liquidity shifted to established coins with active use cases.
The composition of Bitcoin's August breakout also tells a story. Daily spot volume experienced a 153% surge during the breakout compared to 109% for perpetuals, while open interest in Bitcoin has fallen. This suggests that new capital played a more significant role in the breakout than mere leverage.
