Australia Mandates Renewable Energy for New Data Centers, Boosts Renewables Demand

Share

Australia is pushing for new laws to require large-scale data centers to generate an amount of renewable energy equal to or exceeding their electricity usage. The legislation, expected to reach Parliament in early 2027, aims to make these facilities net-generators of power rather than just massive consumers.

The policy also requires data centers to cover 100% of their grid connection costs, a provision designed to ensure that households don't end up subsidizing the infrastructure buildout for an industry primarily serving corporate clients and hyperscalers. Existing data centers in Australia already voluntarily offset around 70% of their energy requirements through power purchase agreements and large-scale generation certificates.

The sector has invested $3.1 billion in infrastructure since 2020, contributing an additional 1.5 TWh of renewable electricity generation to the grid. The government's concern is that without mandates, residential electricity customers would effectively be subsidizing the power needs of tech giants and crypto-adjacent operators through higher grid costs and constrained supply.
