Australian Crypto Firms Face 10% Turnover Fines for Licensing Breaches
Australian cryptocurrency businesses face significant fines if they fail to obtain the necessary licenses by September 30th. The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) has been providing temporary relief to companies, but this will end on October 1st.
Companies that require an Australian Financial Services license must submit an application or request changes to an existing license before the deadline. Firms that need market or clearing and settlement licenses must also notify the regulator and hold a pre-application meeting.
The regulatory body warned that civil and criminal penalties may apply, including fines of up to 10% of a company's yearly revenue. This could have substantial financial implications for exchanges, custody providers, and other digital asset businesses whose activities fall within existing financial services rules.
