Austria has introduced a new tax regulation for cryptocurrency service providers, effective from 2024. The move requires these providers to automatically withhold a 27.5% capital gains tax on Bitcoin sales and certain crypto income if the statutory conditions are met.

This applies mainly to cryptocurrencies acquired after February 28, 2021, with gains taxed regardless of holding period. The tax is withheld and paid directly to the tax office, simplifying tax reporting for investors using domestic exchanges.
