Avalanche Introduces Gross Chain Product for Measuring Blockchain Economies
The Avalanche Foundation has introduced Gross Chain Product (GCP), a framework for measuring real economic output across blockchain ecosystems. GCP aims to separate changes in on-chain activity from token price volatility, providing a more accurate picture of a blockchain's economy.
Currently, the industry relies on metrics such as Total Value Locked and Token Market Cap, which only capture partial aspects of a blockchain's activity. These metrics can be misleading, especially when token prices fluctuate rapidly.
GCP uses the income approach from national accounting to measure value creation on-chain. It aggregates the value flows generated by every protocol on the chain, providing an economy-wide output metric. The framework also includes a real GCP index that strips out token price changes, isolating genuine changes in economic activity.
The data shows that since January 2025, the Avalanche ecosystem has experienced three distinct phases: a soft start, a tariff shock, and a subsequent growth period. During this time, the nominal and real GCP indices have fluctuated, with major spikes corresponding to crypto-wide flash crashes.
