Amazon Web Services' (AWS) flagship AI service, Amazon Bedrock, has undergone a significant overhaul in just 76 days. This transformation was made possible by six engineers using AWS's agentic coding service, Kiro. The original estimate for rebuilding the inference engine behind Bedrock called for 30 to 40 engineers working 12 to 18 months.

The result of this effort is a new architecture called Mantle, designed to solve capacity and performance bottlenecks that emerged as AI workloads on Bedrock exploded. In the first quarter of 2026, Bedrock processed more tokens than it did in all previous years combined, with service usage nearly doubling in March alone.

AWS leadership has cited productivity gains of 10 to 20 times when skilled engineers harness agentic AI tools within controlled workflows. The company's use of Kiro also shows that mandatory human review remains a non-negotiable part of the process, with every line of AI-produced code checked by humans before deployment.
