Azerbaijan Seizes Cryptocurrency in Landmark Ruling
Azerbaijan's authorities have confiscated cryptocurrency in favor of the state for the first time. The Yasamal District Court in Baku sentenced two individuals, B.H.R. and I.R.F., to restriction of liberty and fines totaling millions of manats.
The court ordered the confiscation of 830 units of cryptocurrency held on the international virtual-asset platform Binance. However, it does not specify which type of cryptocurrency was involved, only that it was frozen during the preliminary investigation.
This ruling marks a new stage in Azerbaijan's fight against digital crime and expands law enforcement agencies' ability to track and confiscate virtual assets. The authorities have yet to disclose what will happen to the confiscated assets, including whether they could be sold at auction or transferred to state reserves.
