Balance Stablecoin Collapses Under Oracle Attack
On July 22, 2026, the stablecoin Balance (BLC) suffered a catastrophic collapse, losing over 99% of its value in a matter of hours. The peg was broken due to an oracle exploit that manipulated the Bitcoin price feed, triggering improper liquidations in BTC-backed vaults.
The attacker minted and sold BLC into thin liquidity, draining collateral and crushing confidence at the same time. According to reports, the attacker's proceeds were around $912,000, while BLC holders saw their tokens fall from around $1 to roughly $0.0014.
An analysis of the event reveals that Balance's design was vulnerable to manipulation due to its reliance on a single price feed. When the system believed collateral had fallen below safety thresholds, it liquidated positions that shouldn't have been liquidated, creating a nasty feedback loop.
Experts point out that the use of robust oracles, supply caps, and delayed liquidations could have mitigated the damage. However, the incident highlights the importance of vetting stablecoin designs and oracle systems to prevent similar attacks in the future.
