Banco Santander Dives into Crypto with $4.3M Bitcoin Investment
Banco Santander, one of the world's top 10 banks by market capitalization, has taken a significant step into the crypto space. The Madrid-based bank declared a $4.3 million Bitcoin position to the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), via BlackRock's IBIT ETF.
The investment is part of a broader trend of institutional adoption in Europe, driven by the rise of Bitcoin ETFs in the United States. Banco Santander joins other major financial institutions such as Morgan Stanley and Fidelity, which have integrated Bitcoin ETFs into their portfolios since 2024.
The bank's Openbank subsidiary has also allowed its customers to buy Bitcoin directly for over a year, illustrating a two-speed crypto strategy that combines institutional exposure with retail access. The move is seen as a significant milestone in European institutional crypto adoption, and a signal that the market cannot ignore.
