Bank-Backed Stablecoin Seeks to Challenge USDT and USDC
A consortium of 21 global financial institutions is planning to launch a dollar stablecoin in the first half of 2027. The venture, which includes Bank of America, Citi, Goldman Sachs, Deutsche Bank, and UBS among others, has already committed to forming a new stablecoin company by the second half of 2026.
According to industry experts, the consortium's existing banking relationships could help the token gain early institutional distribution. However, it will be essential for the token to match the liquidity, accessibility, and portability offered by USDT and USDC to achieve widespread adoption.
The consortium plans to launch a euro-denominated stablecoin as its first expansion priority after introducing the dollar-denominated token. Interoperability, wallet support, and reliable redemption will be crucial in determining whether the token circulates beyond member banks.
