Bank of England Tests Stablecoin and Digital Pound Infrastructure
The Bank of England has partnered with Polygon Labs to trial stablecoin and digital pound infrastructure. The initiative aims to accelerate international payment settlement for small and medium enterprises by developing a framework that connects stablecoins, digital pounds, and trade financing.
The Digital Pound Labs program is designed to provide financial services providers and technology companies a sandbox environment to evaluate potential applications of the forthcoming digital pound. Polygon Labs will deliver blockchain infrastructure supporting stablecoin transactions and smart contract execution.
The trial explores dual-currency settlement where exporters accept stablecoins and UK importers use digital pounds. The initiative prioritizes compatibility over substituting existing payment mechanisms, with a focus on bridging private stablecoin transactions with simulated central bank currency within a unified transaction workflow.
