BankChain Alliance Aims for Nationwide Blockchain Network by 2027
The BankChain Alliance has brought together 39 US state banking associations to develop a shared blockchain network for regulated institutions. The goal is to launch this industry-owned network by 2027, allowing banks to deploy onchain financial services such as smart payment tools and tokenized deposits.
BankChain's technology partner will be selected soon, with the aim of achieving interoperability with other blockchains. Banks across the country are invited to take ownership stakes in the network, but details about governance and funding remain unclear.
This initiative aligns with a broader shift towards shared blockchain infrastructure within US finance, where tokenized deposits are treated as claims on individual banks rather than independently issued stablecoins. This approach allows for programmable settlement while keeping customer funds on bank balance sheets.
