Banking Giant Standard Chartered Enters Stablecoin Distribution
Standard Chartered has become the first bank to distribute a Hong Kong dollar-pegged token, known as Anchorpoint's HKDAP. The global bank with $850 billion in assets will serve as a regulated gateway for eligible clients and partners.
The distribution arrangement marks a shift away from exchange-only distribution of stablecoins towards balance-sheet institutions that already hold corporate deposits and manage fiat payment rails.
Standard Chartered's role is not to issue the token, but rather to introduce it to corporates, institutional partners, and existing clients. This could compress the onboarding path for businesses wanting to hold or move Hong Kong dollar stablecoins without going through a crypto-native exchange.
