Banks Bet Big on Stablecoins: A New Era for Crypto and Finance
A group of 21 major banks and financial institutions is planning to launch a dollar-backed stablecoin by 2027, marking a significant shift in the crypto landscape. The consortium includes Bank of America, Citi, Goldman Sachs, Wells Fargo, Deutsche Bank, UBS, and Fidelity Investments, among others.
The proposed stablecoin will be pegged 1-to-1 with the US dollar and designed for wholesale, institutional, and retail uses, including cross-border payments and digital-asset settlement. The group also intends to expand into other G7 currencies, with the euro first in line.
This move is seen as a strategic response from banks to prevent non-bank competitors from pulling deposits out of the traditional financial system. By launching their own stablecoin, banks can compete directly with crypto-native issuers such as Tether and Circle Internet Group.
