Banks Double Down on Digital Assets with Blockchain-Based Payments

Share

Major US banks Wells Fargo and BNY Mellon are expanding their digital asset services beyond mere custody to include blockchain-based payments and financial infrastructure. This move signals a shift towards more complex on-chain solutions for corporate clients, who will be able to make instant payments and settlements without leaving the insured banking system.

Banks like Wells Fargo have been working with other major institutions to develop tokenized deposit networks, which allow for 24/7 transactions between countries. BNY Mellon has also launched its own tokenized deposit service in January, targeting institutional clients. With the partnership with Galaxy Digital, BNY is taking a step further by offering staking capabilities on its digital asset custody platform.

The collaboration between BNY and Galaxy aims to provide institutional-grade infrastructure for digital assets, allowing clients to access more than just safekeeping services. 'As digital assets continue to evolve, clients want more than safekeeping alone - they want a broader set of capabilities delivered through an institutional-grade model,' said Carolyn Weinberg, Chief Product and Innovation Officer at BNY.

The announcements mark a significant development in the adoption of blockchain technology by major financial institutions, which are increasingly looking for ways to compete with global players. Wells Fargo's tokenized deposits will be available to corporate clients starting this fall, with a limited US dollar to British pound exchange initially offered.
