Banks Form Stablecoin Consortium, Signaling Shift Towards Blockchain

Share

A consortium of 21 major banks is preparing to issue a stablecoin, marking a significant shift in the financial industry's acceptance of blockchain technology. According to Alex Witt, founding general partner at Verda Ventures, this move indicates that traditional finance (TradFi) is now driving growth in blockchain rails, rather than the crypto space.

The banks involved in the consortium include Citi, Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, UBS, and Fidelity. This development validates stablecoins as a core piece of future financial infrastructure, expanding opportunities for investment in the ecosystem. As more money and tokenized assets move on-chain, demand for custody, compliance, liquidity, settlement, and infrastructure connecting traditional finance with blockchain-based markets will increase.

Ryan Kirkley, CEO at Global Settlement Network, notes that issuing a regulated digital dollar solves the issuance question but does not address liquidity between different currencies and settlement assets. Without connections between these assets, digital money simply recreates existing liquidity silos in financial markets.
