Banks Launch Blockchain Network to Counter Crypto Industry
American banks are shifting their strategy in response to regulatory tensions with the crypto industry. The BankChain Alliance, formed by 39 state banking associations, aims to create a blockchain network controlled by the banking sector.
The alliance's stated goal is to launch the network in 2027, under exclusive control of the banking sector. The network will support stablecoins, tokenized deposits, and automated settlements.
BankChain Alliance brings together state associations representing thousands of community banks, rather than a restricted circle of international institutions. This regional anchoring sets it apart from similar initiatives like Swift's tests for 24/7 settlement of tokenized assets with global banks.
The creation of the BankChain Alliance marks a turning point for the crypto market. It remains to be seen whether it is a real banking infrastructure or merely a collective ambition, with the choice of technology partner to determine the network's scalability and capacity to interface with existing financial infrastructure.
