Banks Plan Stablecoin Launch for 2027
A consortium of 21 major financial institutions is planning to launch a stablecoin in 2027. The group includes Bank of America, Goldman Sachs, Citi, Deutsche Bank, UBS, Santander, MUFG, and Fidelity Investments, among others.
The initial product will be a US dollar-denominated stablecoin, which aims to comply with the US GENIUS Act and the EU's MiCA. The consortium also plans to expand to other G7 currencies, starting with the euro.
Regulatory alignment is key to the plan, as stablecoin projects increasingly rise or fall on regulatory fit. By explicitly referencing both US and EU frameworks, the consortium wants the token to operate not just as a blockchain-native instrument but as an asset that can be integrated into regulated distribution channels.
