Banks Resist CLARITY Act Over Crypto Competition Fears

Share

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has weighed in on the CLARITY Act, stating that some banks are opposed to the legislation due to concerns about competition from crypto companies.

Armstrong identified several major financial institutions, including Goldman Sachs, Citi, BNY, Fidelity, and BlackRock, as supporters of the bill. He described it as 'very good for banks' and noted that most banks recognize its potential to grow their business using blockchain technology.

However, Armstrong acknowledged that not all banks share this view, citing concerns about competition from crypto companies. 'They don't want to have to pay higher rates to their customers,' he stated.

The CLARITY Act has been a contentious issue in the financial industry, with some arguing it would provide clarity and regulatory certainty for businesses using blockchain technology. The bill cleared the Senate Banking Committee in May and is currently awaiting a floor vote, which is scheduled for September 15.
