Banks U-Turn on Stablecoins: From Threat to Strategic Partner
Stablecoins are no longer viewed as a threat by traditional banks. In fact, some major banks that once opposed stablecoins are now considering creating their own or developing tokenized deposits to bring blockchain technology into traditional banking.
This shift in perspective is largely driven by the increasing adoption of stablecoins for business payments, international transfers, and online commerce. Companies like Visa, BlackRock, Google, and DoorDash already use stablecoins for these purposes, making them a valuable tool for businesses looking to streamline their payment processes.
Tokenized deposits, on the other hand, allow banks to maintain control over digital money while still leveraging blockchain technology. This system converts traditional bank deposits into digital tokens that can be used on a blockchain network, providing benefits like increased security and efficiency.
Banks are now preparing for a future where both tokenized deposits and stablecoins coexist alongside traditional banking systems. The BankChain Alliance is working to build blockchain systems that support both tokenized deposits and stablecoins, while major banks like Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and Santander are developing their own stablecoin projects.
