Banks Unite for 2027 Stablecoin Launch: 21 Institutions Join Forces
A coalition of 21 major financial institutions has come together to launch a jointly backed stablecoin by 2027. The group includes global banks such as Goldman Sachs, Citi, UBS, and Bank of America, as well as investment firms like Fidelity Investments. According to the announcement, the new company will introduce a US dollar-denominated stablecoin in the first half of 2027, with plans to add other G7 currencies over time.
The planned stablecoin is designed for wholesale, institutional, and retail markets, and aims to combine bank-level compliance with the speed and programmability associated with blockchain-based money. The group has stated that the product will comply with relevant regulations, including the US GENIUS Act and the European Union's MiCA framework.
The project marks a significant escalation in the financial sector's stablecoin ambitions, as banks increasingly explore whether regulated digital cash can sit alongside deposits, payment networks, and tokenized securities. If the group meets its 2027 launch target, it could become one of the first large-scale tests of whether a stablecoin backed by established global financial institutions can gain traction across both traditional and blockchain-based markets.
