Banks Unite for 2027 Stablecoin Launch
Twenty-one major banks from four continents have joined forces to launch their own stablecoin. The unnamed company, which includes Bank of America, Citi, and Goldman Sachs, aims to issue a U.S. dollar-pegged coin in the first half of 2027. This marks a significant development in the world of finance, as these banks will be combining their distribution networks with bank-grade compliance and risk management capabilities.
The stablecoin is intended for wholesale, institutional, and retail purposes, including cross-border payments and digital-asset settlement. The project builds upon previously announced plans by ten banks to explore the feasibility of building a 1:1 reserve-backed private form of digital currency operating on public blockchains.
The company has not yet revealed its name, token branding, or supported networks, but it will comply with regulations such as the U.S. GENIUS Act and the European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets regulation.
