Base Brings Tokenized Stocks Onchain with Coinbase Partnership
Base has taken a significant step towards its vision of bringing the world's economy onchain. The platform has launched tokenized stocks issued by Coinbase, built on the B20 standard, which are now live natively on Base.
These tokens represent real shares, held 1:1 by a regulated custodian, and owned outright by whoever holds the token. This means users can hold fractional shares of companies like Apple and NVIDIA directly in their self-custody wallets, access deep liquidity on Aerodrome, and use them across the Base DeFi ecosystem.
This development opens up new opportunities for builders, allowing them to create products that weren't possible with only crypto assets. For example, an app could be built where users hold Apple next to their stablecoins and borrow against it.
Tokenized stocks also bring yield, as they pay dividends, and lending shares to other investors is one of the oldest and largest yield businesses in finance, with trillions of dollars of stock on loan at any time. This significantly widens the product set that lending protocols can serve.
