Base Sees Surge in Commerce Payments Protocol Activity
The Commerce Payments Protocol, jointly developed by Coinbase and Shopify, has seen significant growth on Base since its launch in June 2025. The protocol processed approximately $1.7 million in settled USDC volume across around 8,000 transactions, with the majority of activity concentrated in recent weeks.
This surge in volume suggests that the protocol hit an inflection point after a slow initial ramp, with roughly $750,000 processed in just two months prior to the latest data. The Commerce Payments Protocol is an open-source, permissionless smart contract system deployed on Base, handling escrow-based payment flows and refund processing.
The protocol has diversified beyond its initial Shopify-only merchant base, with operators outside the Shopify ecosystem beginning to build on the open-source infrastructure. USDC serves as the primary payment token, and merchants can choose to take payouts in USDC or convert automatically to local currency without foreign exchange fees.
