Based Rollups Shift Sequencing Power from Centralized Operators
Based rollups are an alternative to traditional sequencers in layer two (L2) blockchain technology. Instead of relying on a central operator, L1 proposers order L2 batches, which are then used to build the L2 chain.
This approach removes the single point of failure and censorship risk associated with centralized sequencers. However, it also introduces new challenges such as latency tied to L1 conditions and occasional reorg risks.
The based rollup design is not a replacement for robust proofs and secure bridges. The Taiko ZK rollup incident in July 2026 highlighted the importance of mature proofs and secure bridges, even with based sequencing.
