BC Data Center Sparks Concern Over Energy Usage and AI's Job-Cutting Ambitions
A high-tech business center called the Columbia Lake Technology Centre has been built in Canal Flats, British Columbia. The site was previously home to a defunct lumber mill. Iris Energy constructed its Bitcoin mining data center at this location.
Tim Bilida raised concerns about the energy usage of these data centers, stating 'Isn't there a drought in Alberta? Do we really have that much electricity that we can afford to add power-intensive data farms to the grid?' He also questioned whether the electricity should be used for electric vehicles and heating homes instead.
Bilida further expressed his concerns about the potential impact of AI, stating 'And if these data centres are being built to power AI, whose main stated goal is to eliminate jobs, why are we allowing this, Premier Doug Ford?'
