Berlin Hackers Demand 30 Bitcoin Amid Ongoing Cyberattack Investigation
The city of Berlin is facing a significant cyberattack after hackers breached its administrative data network two weeks ago. The attackers, part of a group called Rhysida, demanded payment in exchange for not publishing sensitive data they accessed during the breach.
Rhysida uses specialist malware for extortion attempts and has been active for several years, according to Der Spiegel. The hackers threatened to publish data unless their demands were met, specifically 30 bitcoin worth around €2 million ($2.31 million) at current rates.
Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner stated that the state of Berlin will not be blackmailed by the attackers. Investigations into the cyberattack are ongoing, with the government withholding information about which data was accessed and who is behind the attack.
