Berlin Rejects Ransom Demand, Faces 6TB Data Dump

The city of Berlin is facing a major data breach after rejecting a ransom demand from the Rhysida ransomware group. The hackers had asked for 30 Bitcoin, but the city refused to pay, and the attackers subsequently released around 5.7 terabytes of stolen government data online.

The leaked material includes sensitive information such as emails, phone numbers, passwords, contracts, and other confidential files from Berlin's state administration. Two Senate departments were affected: urban development, housing, mobility, transport, and environmental affairs.

Authorities are working to determine whether personal information was among the stolen files and what risks the disclosure could create. The city had warned before the initial release that the stolen material could include personal data belonging to government employees, citizens, and companies.
