Bertie Ahern's Crypto Charity AB Foundation Shuts Down Amid Regulatory Scrutiny

The AB Foundation, a crypto charity chaired by former Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern, is shutting down after failing to conduct any operational meetings beyond its launch. The non-profit applied for a voluntary strike-off through Ireland's Companies Registration Office (CRO) and will be formally dissolved.

Launched in early 2025, the AB Foundation aimed to use blockchain technology and artificial intelligence to transparently fund global philanthropic efforts. However, it never traded despite claiming to have donated over $1.9 million to support victims of a fire at Hong Kong's Kwong Fuk Estate in Tai Po.

The foundation became embroiled in controversy after investigations revealed ties between AB and a Cambodian conglomerate facing U.S. sanctions over alleged involvement in crypto fraud, scam operations, and human trafficking networks. Ahern pushed back earlier this year, stating he had 'zero connection' to the Timor-Leste development or related donations.

The collapse of the AB Foundation highlights rising regulatory scrutiny for crypto entities tied to sanctioned groups, as well as tighter global oversight for crypto philanthropy.
