Bessent Slams Senate Democrats for Blocking Clarity Act
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has accused Senate Democrats of political cowardice for blocking a floor vote on the CLARITY Act, a digital asset market-structure bill that has been stuck in limbo since May.
The bill, which passed the House in 2025 with a 294-134 vote, aims to bring clarity to the regulatory environment surrounding cryptocurrencies. However, Senate Democrats have expressed concerns about consumer protections and have conditioned their support on stronger ethics enforcement language.
Bessent framed the Democratic holdout as a failure of political will rather than a substantive legislative dispute, challenging Majority Leader John Thune directly and questioning whether lawmakers would support American innovation or allow other nations to capture digital asset market leadership by default.
