Bessent Urges Senate to Advance CLARITY Act Ahead of Key Vote
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has urged senators to advance the CLARITY Act as lawmakers prepare to return from their August recess for a procedural vote that will test whether the crypto market structure bill has enough support to move forward.
The Senate is set to hold a Sept. 15 procedural vote, known as cloture, on the motion to proceed with the legislation. This vote requires 60 votes to move the legislation forward and is crucial in determining if the CLARITY Act will be considered on the floor.
Bessent made his call for action on X, stating that failure to move the legislation would send a 'troubling signal' about U.S. leadership in digital assets.
The National Sheriffs' Association had previously opposed the bill but dropped its opposition on Sept. 3, changing its position to neutral.
