Bessent Warns US Crypto Leadership at Risk Without Clarity Act Passage
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is urging senators to keep the CLARITY Act alive, warning that failure to advance the landmark cryptocurrency legislation would undermine America's leadership in crypto.
The bill aims to establish a comprehensive regulatory framework for the industry and prevent its misuse. Bessent has framed the legislation as a matter of national security and international competitiveness, stating that 'failing to do so would send a troubling signal to our allies and adversaries alike that America is unwilling to lead on the future of digital assets and willing to forgo enhanced national security tools to combat their misuse.'
The Senate will hold an initial procedural vote on September 15, which requires 60 votes. Currently, Republicans hold 53 seats, with at least seven Democrats needed to join them.
Crypto policy advocate Dan Spuller predicts that more Democrats could cross the aisle than expected. However, Republican Sen. Thom Tillis warns that the legislation could fail without further compromise on ethics language governing crypto ventures linked to senior government officials.
