Bhutan's $1 Billion Bitcoin Treasury Funds Futuristic Mindfulness City
The Kingdom of Bhutan has created a state-owned treasury of over 10,000 Bitcoin to finance its futuristic Gelephu Mindfulness City. The city is designed to attract global technology and finance investments while integrating Buddhist spiritual heritage.
Bhutan's economic architecture relies on exporting hydroelectric power to India, but during monsoon seasons, river flows generate immense surplus electricity that exceeds domestic demand and export transmission capacity. To capture this value, the government deployed specialized computing hardware to convert the surplus into digital liquidity.
Druk Holding and Investments invested USD 539 million in crypto operations between 2021 and 2022, representing nearly a fifth of Bhutan's total gross domestic product at the time. This investment enabled the nation to accumulate a reserve that peaked at over 13,000 BTC in late 2024.
The Royal Government transferred over 1,000 BTC, valued at approximately USD 70 million, to fund immediate municipal development in Gelephu Mindfulness City. This transfer was part of a broader strategy to bypass traditional debt markets and collateralize natural resources into liquid capital.
