Binance Accused of Hiding Assets from Global Crime Investigators

European law enforcement agencies have launched a scathing attack on Binance, accusing the exchange of complicating international efforts to track digital scammers and dismantle transnational financial crime networks. The allegations come despite recent massive regulatory settlements and the ouster of founder Changpeng Zhao.

The European investigators claim that Binance's internal compliance architecture consistently fails to provide rapid, transparent data necessary to trace stolen funds. When cybercriminals execute ransomware attacks, phishing schemes, or massive decentralized finance (DeFi) hacks, the stolen assets are frequently routed through Binance's complex liquidity pools to obscure their origin.

Law enforcement officials argue that the exchange’s sluggish response to urgent subpoenas allows criminal syndicates ample time to liquidate assets into untraceable privacy coins or fiat currency. Investigators note that while Binance publicly champions its cooperation with international police, the practical reality involves navigating a labyrinthine corporate structure specifically designed to exploit jurisdictional ambiguities.

The friction between Binance and European police is part of a broader global crackdown on unregulated digital asset exchanges. The United States Department of Justice previously levied a historic $4.3 billion fine against the company for egregious violations of anti-money laundering (AML) protocols, establishing a definitive precedent for aggressive enforcement.

The Nigerian government has also escalated its confrontation with Binance, detaining senior executives and accusing the platform of orchestrating currency speculation that severely destabilized the Naira. The inability of local law enforcement to compel timely cooperation from offshore entities like Binance makes regions vulnerable to sophisticated digital fraud and terrorist financing.
